Ultra-runner Granny Scales New Kinion Heights' at Aberdeen Development

With an aspiration to move closer to her daughter and grandchildren, Katy Smith decided to relocate from Glasgow, where she had lived for 51 years, to Aberdeen.
Having lived in a tenement apartment in Shettleston in Glasgow, which required a lot of maintenance, Katy, now in her 50s, wanted a home that wouldn’t consume all of her time and energy in renovations.
Secondary school teacher Katy made the move into her dream three-bedroom home at Bancon Homes’ Kinion Heights development earlier this year, just in time to see her baby granddaughter, born.
The location of Kinion Heights, adjacent to P&J Live, close to Aberdeen International Airport and just a 10-minute drive from Bridge of Don, Kingswells and Westhill, was a key deciding factor.
“My key criteria was to move as close to my daughter and grandchildren, Hemen and Hanna, as I could,” said Katy. “I had never heard of Bancon Homes, and I wasn’t sure if the homes would be affordable, but I was bowled over with how professional and nice the Bancon team was. They really went out of their way to help make it happen.”
When she started looking for her new home last October, Katy never thought she’d move in time for her second grandchild being born but as it turned out, she moved and started a new job at a local school the day before welcoming granddaughter Hanna into the world.
Her three-bedroom Thistle-style house has a kitchen diner which has become the hub of the home.
Katy added: “There is so much storage for a new build home, with two huge cupboards and I love the kitchen. I spend most of my time reading and relaxing in the kitchen. The house is very warm, and it doesn’t take much to heat it.”
As well as having a designer Symphony kitchen and ample storage, the houses have a band B Energy Efficiency rating as well as a two-year Bancon after-care service.
Another key factor for Katy was access to country trails and hills. As a marathon and ultra runner, she wanted to live somewhere with the perfect balance of amenities and easy access to rural running routes.
She said: “I am still getting to know the area but there is so much on my doorstep, Brimmond Hill, Elrick Hill, Blackhall and Bennachie are nearby too. To me, it’s like heaven. I would have moved anywhere my daughter was, but I couldn’t have moved to a more perfect place.”
